New York State made a major announcement yesterday with regards to the state’s health insurance exchange:

New Name

In a push that has started at the federal level, the NY Health Benefits Exchange has changed its name to, “NY State of Health – The Official Health Plan Marketplace”. Apparently, the federal government feels that the term “marketplace” is more appealing to consumers than “exchange”. As such, more and more states are following suit, including New York. As a licensed insurance brokerage operating independently of the state and federal government, we will use the terms “exchange” and “marketplace” interchangeably.

Web Portal Changes

Several changes have occurred on the NYS exchange web portal. They include the following:

-The addition of social media links (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Google+, etc.)
-New images and home page mosaic
-New exchange logo
-Updated Resources web site section, including a new section which provides individuals with a Tax Credit and Premium Estimator
-Additionally, a list of health insurance companies writing business through the exchange is now being provided on the NY exchange web site
